An Elegant Equine Photoshoot with Showjumper Holly Hammond and Her Horses Bernie & Mae

Some photoshoots simply linger in your memory — and my equine session with talented showjumper Holly Hammond and her two beautiful horses, Bernie and Mae, is one of those.

Although this photoshoot took place a few years ago, it remains one of my favourites. Holly’s natural grace with her horses and the quiet, genuine connection she shares with them made the session truly special.

We began the morning at Holly’s yard in Marchington, where Bernie was first to step in front of the camera. Despite a few intermittent showers, the light softened beautifully between the rain, creating a timeless, painterly feel. Holly’s calm and confident way with her horses made for some truly heartfelt portraits.

Once the skies cleared, it was Mae’s turn — and the sunshine couldn’t have arrived at a better moment. Holly chose a denim dress paired with Fairfax & Favor ankle boots, a look that balanced country elegance with relaxed sophistication. Mae looked stunning against the soft tones of the yard, and together they created an effortlessly stylish combination.

Afterwards, we travelled to Eland Lodge for a touch of showjumping practice. Watching Holly and Mae in their element was a joy — their partnership full of trust, rhythm, and precision. I love capturing these moments in motion, where the focus, energy, and connection between horse and rider come together so naturally.

Sadly, Holly no longer has Bernie and Mae, but these photographs serve as a lasting memory of that special chapter in her equestrian journey. For me, that’s the true beauty of equine photography — creating elegant, emotive imagery that preserves the bond between horse and rider long after the moment has passed.
