In Loving Memory of Urania: A Timeless Equine Photoshoot with Holly and Her Spanish PRE Mare

Some horses leave a lasting mark on your heart, and Urania, Holly’s beautiful Spanish PRE mare, was one of those souls.

I’ve known Holly and Urania’s story since the very beginning — I first met Urania when she arrived at the yard as a foal, and even then, she had a spark of spirit and elegance that stood out. Watching both Holly and Urania grow and mature together over the years was something truly special. Their bond was remarkable — built on patience, trust, and a deep understanding that only comes from years spent side by side.

This photoshoot, which took place around five years ago at Holly’s yard in Hartshorne, remains one of the most memorable sessions I’ve had the pleasure to capture. Even now, looking back through the images, I’m reminded of the quiet beauty of that day.

Holly chose to wear a long, flowing ball gown, which added a sense of timeless grace to the shoot — perfectly complementing Urania’s natural poise. The soft movement of the gown against Urania’s elegant frame made for an unforgettable series of portraits that radiate connection and calm.

At the time, Holly and Urania were excelling in dressage, though Urania also had quite the adventurous streak — she loved to jump and was known to escape from her field whenever she could! That playful, free-spirited nature came through in her expressions and energy during the shoot, which made the images even more meaningful.

Heartbreakingly, Urania is no longer with us, and writing this brings a lump to my throat. Yet, these photographs now hold even greater importance — a beautiful reminder of the joy, companionship, and love they shared. This is what equine photography means to me: preserving the moments that become priceless memories.

We concluded the session with a few sweet images of Bert, the Cairn Terrier puppy, who brought plenty of smiles to the end of an emotional, heartwarming day.

Even though this session took place several years ago, it remains a timeless celebration of the bond between horse and human — elegant, emotional and enduring.
