Letting Dogs Be Dogs: A Relaxed Dalmatian Photoshoot in Derbyshire

There’s something incredibly special about photographing dogs in a place that already feels like home.

Back in March 2022, I spent a quiet, slightly drizzly morning at a beautiful farm in Draycott in the Clay, Derbyshire, with two Dalmatians, Mia and her daughter, Juno. No studio setups, no structured posing, no expectations. Just space, freedom and two dogs completely at ease in their own world.

And sometimes, that’s where the most meaningful images come from.

A Different Approach to Dog Photography

Not every photoshoot needs to be polished or perfectly styled.

For Mia and Juno, the session was intentionally relaxed. Within the safety of the farm, they were free to wander, explore, and simply be themselves. They ran together, paused to investigate scents, and made their way down to the stream, where Mia, quite happily, stepped straight into the water.

There were no commands, no pressure to sit or stay. Just quiet observation and gentle guidance when needed.

This is what I would describe as a documentary-style dog photoshoot capturing moments as they naturally unfold.

Why “Imperfect” Moments Matter Most

It’s easy to think that the “best” photographs are the ones where everything is perfectly composed.

But for many dog owners, those aren’t the images that mean the most.

The slightly muddy paws.
The way they run together without hesitation.
The curious glances, the movement, the connection.

These are the moments that feel real. The ones that reflect who your dog truly is.

Mia and Juno’s gallery wasn’t about perfection—it was about personality, relationship, and memory.

Creating Space for Natural Behaviour

Working on location like this allows dogs to relax in a way that simply isn’t possible in more controlled environments.

There’s no rush. No distractions. No expectation to perform.

Just time.

And when you give dogs that space, you begin to see something deeper:

  • their bond with each other

  • their confidence in familiar surroundings

  • their individual quirks and energy

That’s what makes a session like this so personal.

A Quiet Kind of Luxury

Luxury doesn’t always mean elaborate setups or dramatic styling.

Sometimes, it’s the simplicity of a calm experience.
A session tailored entirely around your dog.
Photographs that feel honest, timeless, and uniquely yours.

Mia and Juno’s shoot is a reminder that beautiful imagery doesn’t have to be forced—it can be found in the everyday moments we might otherwise overlook.
