Floyd the Whippet: Letting Dogs Be Dogs in Overseal, Derbyshire

Back in March 2022, I met Floyd, a beautiful Whippet with plenty of personality for a relaxed photoshoot in the lovely village of Overseal, Derbyshire.

From the very beginning, Floyd’s owner was clear about one thing:
this shoot wasn’t about perfectly posed portraits or asking Floyd to sit still.

It was about capturing him.

The zoomies.
The curiosity.
The quiet little pauses in between.

Because if you know Whippets, you’ll know… they’re not exactly built for standing still for long.

A Natural Approach to Dog Photography

As a dog photographer in Derbyshire, sessions like this are always my favourite.

There’s something incredibly special about letting a dog simply be themselves exploring their surroundings, following scents, stretching their legs and occasionally pausing just long enough for a fleeting, beautiful moment.

Floyd did exactly that.

He raced across open spaces, nose to the ground one minute, ears flying in the wind the next. And in between all that movement, there were those quieter snippets, moments of stillness that felt completely natural, never forced.

Those are the moments that tell the real story.

Why You Don’t Need a “Well-Trained” Dog

One of the most common worries I hear from dog owners is:

“My dog won’t sit still long enough for photos.”

And honestly? That’s absolutely fine.

Floyd’s session is the perfect example of why.

Not every dog needs to sit, stay, or pose on command. In fact, some of the most meaningful images come from movement, personality and real-life behaviour.

Whether your dog is full of energy, easily distracted, or just prefers doing their own thing, that’s exactly what makes them them and that’s always worth capturing.

A Beautiful Location Close to Home

Overseal, nestled in the Derbyshire countryside, provided the perfect backdrop for Floyd’s shoot.

With open walking paths, natural textures, and space to run freely, it allowed everything to unfold naturally no pressure, no expectations, just a relaxed walk with a camera in hand.

Sometimes the best locations aren’t grand or dramatic, they’re the familiar places where your dog feels happiest.

Real Moments Over Perfect Poses

Every image from Floyd’s session reflects a moment exactly as it happened.

No staging.
No forcing.
No expectations.

Just:

  • A Whippet doing zoomies

  • A curious nose exploring new scents

  • A fleeting pause in the middle of it all

And that’s what makes these images so meaningful.

Thinking About a Dog Photoshoot in Derbyshire?

If you’ve ever thought about having photos of your dog but worried they won’t “behave”… you’re not alone and you don’t need to worry.

My approach is simple:

Let dogs be dogs.

Whether that means running, sniffing, exploring, or occasionally standing still for half a second, I’ll capture those moments as they naturally happen.

Because those are the memories you’ll want to keep.
