Horse Photoshoot in the New Forest | Nicole & Koda
Back in March 2022, I had the pleasure of photographing Nicole and her pony, Koda, during a session with The Training Barn at a livery yard in the New Forest.
This wasn’t your typical picturesque location. The yard itself was very commercial and from a photography perspective, it didn’t naturally lend itself to soft, aesthetic imagery. Combined with dull skies and steady rain, it certainly challenged the idea of a “perfect” shoot.
But this is exactly where experience and a different way of seeing comes in.
Rather than relying on the setting, I carefully worked around it, seeking out quieter corners, cleaner backdrops and softer light wherever possible. With a thoughtful approach, even the most ordinary environment can be transformed into something beautiful.
Nicole chose a smart casual outfit, which worked perfectly for the feel of the session. It suited the cooler spring weather while still looking timeless and effortless in the final images.
Most importantly, the connection between Nicole and Koda truly stood out. Koda’s calm nature and Nicole’s relaxed presence made the entire session feel natural and unforced proving that it’s the relationship you share with your horse that really matters in photographs.
This session is a reminder that you don’t need perfect weather or a luxury location to create meaningful equine portraits. With the right approach, beautiful images can be created anywhere.
