A Relaxed Bay Roan Pony Photoshoot in the New Forest
There is something incredibly special about photographing horses in the New Forest. The peaceful surroundings the soft woodland light and the slower pace all come together to create the most beautiful atmosphere for natural equine photography.
This lovely session took place at a stunning private yard tucked away in the heart of the New Forest and was organised through The Training Barn as part of my continued photography training and development.
I spent the afternoon photographing a young lady and her beautiful bay roan pony across different areas of the yard making the most of every backdrop and detail available to us. From rustic fencing and stable details to the surrounding woodland paths every location added something unique to the final gallery.
One of the things I loved most about this session was how relaxed it felt. We explored different angles natural movement and quieter moments between horse and owner to create photographs that felt genuine and full of personality rather than overly posed.
The session included two outfit changes which gave us a lovely variety throughout the shoot while still keeping everything cohesive and natural. The soft neutral tones worked perfectly against the rich colouring of her pony and the earthy woodland surroundings.
The woodland area was especially beautiful to photograph in. The trees created soft filtered light which is always perfect for creating timeless portraits with depth warmth and atmosphere. These quieter locations also helped both horse and owner settle naturally into the session allowing me to capture connection and emotion without forcing anything.
I also loved incorporating little details and props already around the yard. Sometimes the simplest surroundings create the most authentic photographs especially within equine photography where texture countryside character and natural light play such an important role.
Sessions like this are exactly why I love equine photography so much. They are never just about creating pretty photographs. They are about preserving memories documenting partnerships and capturing the feeling of this chapter in someone’s life with their horse.
