Forest Equine Photography in the New Forest | Natural Bond Between Horse and Rider

There are some places that feel like they hold stories within the trees, the New Forest is one of them. This equine photoshoot took place back in May 2022 on a beautifully quiet yard tucked deep within the forest, surrounded by dappled light, tall trees and the kind of stillness you don’t often find anywhere else.

On the day, I worked with two horse owners, each bringing their own ponies, both completely different in colour and character one a striking black pony, the other a soft dun. Together, they created a beautiful contrast against the green woodland backdrop, especially in the bright, high summer sunlight we had that day.

Although the light was strong and challenging at times, it actually added something quite honest to the session. No heavy styling. No staged moments. Just real connection, real partnership and horses being horses in their own environment.

What stood out most wasn’t the setting, or even the light, it was the bond between each rider and their pony. Those quiet moments of understanding. The gentle touches. The way the horses softened around their owners, completely at ease in their presence.

This is what equine photography is really about for me not perfection but connection. The kind that builds over time, through trust, routine, and shared experiences in the saddle and on the ground.

The New Forest gave us the perfect backdrop for that story. Ancient woodland, winding light and horses moving freely through a space that felt entirely their own.

I’ll be sharing each rider’s story separately, as both sessions had their own personality and energy but together they reflect something I always try to capture in my work: the quiet, honest bond between horse and human.
