Nicki & Rhea: A Sunny Evening in Derbyshire Capturing Equine Bonds

Back in August 2021, I had the pleasure of photographing Nickie and her lovely mare, Rhea, during a sunny evening near Risley in Derbyshire. It was such a joy to see the bond between them—it really shines through in every image.

Nickie wanted to include her dog, Noodle, who I had photographed a few years earlier when he was much younger. It was wonderful to see him again, now full of character and charm, joining in the session and adding even more personality to the images.

Rhea is a very opinionated mare, in the best way! Her playful and expressive nature really brought life to the photos, making each shot feel unique and full of personality.

For this session, Nickie opted for my framed print package, which included a beautiful 16" frame, as well as a couple of digital images. I love working with clients who value tangible, heirloom-quality prints that can be displayed at home and enjoyed for years to come.

We explored several areas within the yard and ventured out onto the country lane, making use of gates, buildings, and even the mounting block to create variety in the images. Two outfit changes helped keep the session dynamic: the first featured a floaty patterned skirt paired with a black sleeveless top, perfect for capturing soft, elegant movement. Later in the evening, as the sun began to set, Nicki changed into jeans, over-the-knee boots, and a thin jumper for a more relaxed, natural vibe.

Capturing genuine connections like this—between horse, human, and even their beloved pets, is exactly why I love what I do.
