Summer Dog Photoshoots — Why Early Morning & Evening Sessions Are Perfect for Your Dog

When summer arrives, many dog owners assume they need to put off booking a photoshoot until the cooler months return. The truth is, beautiful summer dog portraits are absolutely possible, we simply need to work a little smarter around the warmer temperatures.

At TMS Photography, dog welfare will always come first. Summer sessions are carefully planned around the cooler parts of the day, allowing your dog to stay comfortable while we create natural, heartfelt images together.

Why Summer Can Actually Be Beautiful for Dog Photoshoots

Summer offers some of the loveliest conditions for photography here in the UK. Soft golden sunlight, lush green woodlands, long grasses, wildflowers and warm evening light all create the perfect backdrop for relaxed, timeless dog portraits.

The key is choosing the right time of day.

During the warmer months particularly June and July, I recommend:

  • Early morning sessions between approximately 6.00am – 9.00am

  • Evening sessions between approximately 8.00pm – 9.30pm

Most dog photoshoots only need around an hour, which makes these quieter cooler windows ideal.

Early mornings are especially lovely during summer. The light is soft, locations are peaceful and temperatures are much kinder for dogs. Evening sessions also bring beautiful golden light and a calm atmosphere once the heat of the day begins to fade.

Choosing the Right Location

Summer sessions are always planned with your dog's comfort in mind.

I often recommend:

  • Woodland walks with plenty of shade

  • Quiet countryside locations

  • Areas near streams or water

  • Open spaces with cooler airflow

  • Locations with easy access and plenty of rest opportunities

A Gentle Reminder About Heat & Dog Safety

Dogs can be vulnerable to heatstroke during warmer weather, especially in the middle of the day when temperatures rise quickly.

Some important things to remember:

  • Avoid midday walks or activities in hotter temperatures

  • Bring water with you wherever possible

  • Check pavements before walking

  • Allow plenty of rest breaks

  • Watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, lethargy or distress

Thankfully, our UK summers are often moderate rather than constantly extreme, which means photoshoots can usually be scheduled safely around the weather conditions.

If temperatures are simply too warm, sessions can always be rearranged. Your dog's wellbeing always comes first.
