Winter Light in the New Forest: Photographing Wild Ponies at Sunset
There’s something special about the New Forest in winter it is quieter, softer and beautifully still.
On this particular evening, I hadn’t planned a shoot. I simply had my camera with me as the sun began to set, casting that gentle golden rim light across the landscape. The wild ponies were grazing peacefully, completely undisturbed and it felt like one of those rare moments where everything slows down.
I took the opportunity to capture a few frames nothing staged, nothing directed just the ponies as they are, in their natural environment. The low winter sun created a subtle glow around them, highlighting their shapes and adding a softness that you can’t replicate.
These are the moments I’m always drawn to. Whether it’s wildlife, horses, or dogs, it’s never about forcing an image it’s about noticing the light, the atmosphere, and allowing the story to unfold naturally.
This little series feels like a reminder of why I love photography in the first place.
