Fields, Shelters & Freedom: Creative Equine Photography Anywhere
Being a photographer often means making the most of the spaces available to you and that’s especially true in equine photography. A few years ago now, during my training with The Training Barn, I had the chance to explore the beautiful New Forest for a photoshoot. While this session was part of my learning, it also gave me the chance to experience a location I had never explored before and what a magical setting it was!
Not everyone has access to a yard or formal arena for their horse photoshoot and that’s perfectly okay. Some clients have their own land, fields, or open spaces and these can be just as beautiful, if not more, than a traditional setting. During this shoot, we worked with one wonderful pony and his lovely owner in a simple field, complete with a small shelter and plenty of room to move.
The beauty of this session was how the location shaped the shoot. Open spaces give horses freedom, and a natural shelter or tree line can provide excellent framing for photos. Even if a location isn’t “perfect,” with a little creativity, every space has potential for capturing connection, movement, and personality.
As a photographer, I love working with what’s available. whether it’s a grand arena, your own paddock, or a quiet corner of a field. Each location tells a story and gives the photos their own unique character.
If you’re thinking about an equine photoshoot this year, remember: it doesn’t have to be a perfect yard to create timeless, heartfelt images. Even a simple field can become a stunning backdrop when you work with what you have and your horse’s personality shines through.
