Why Your Dog Doesn’t Need to Sit Still for Great Photos | TMS Photography
Every so often, a dog comes along who completely redefines what a photoshoot can be and Logan, the English Pointer, was one of them.
From the moment we started, Logan made it clear that sitting still wasn’t on his agenda. He ran, jumped, bounded through the grass, and had the absolute time of his life. And as I stood there with my camera, I couldn’t help but smile because that’s exactly what I want to capture: the joy, the personality, the chaos, and the character that make our dogs who they are.
I hear it all the time from owners:
“My dog would never sit still for photos.”
“They won’t pose!”
“It would be impossible to get good pictures.”
But here’s the secret, they don’t need to sit still.
My approach to dog photography is simple: let them be dogs. During a walking portrait session, we take a relaxed wander, giving your dog time to explore, sniff, and just be themselves. Whether it’s that split-second moment mid-jump (like Logan flying through the air!) or a quiet pause when they look back at you with those adoring eyes — that’s where the true magic happens.
Yes, these sessions can get a bit muddy and yes, I often end up lying on the ground to get the shot but those natural, unscripted moments tell your dog’s story far better than any posed photo ever could.
So if you’ve been putting off a photoshoot because you think your dog won’t behave or won’t sit still, think again. You might just end up with images that show them exactly as you know and love them full of energy, joy, and personality.
